Single vineyard Shiraz 2006
Winemakers Comments
Harvest; Handpicked from the second of three drought vintages. The grapes were grown in the terra rossa soils of our vineyard. The grapes benefitted from a long ripening period and warm, dry summer. These were ideal conditions to minimise disease pressure in the vineyard and ensure great complexity and physiological ripeness. The yield was less than 2 tonnes per acre.
Winemaking; A cold soak of 2 days enhanced the ripe tannins and deep colour of the wine. This was followed by a long fermentation of 6-7 days ensuring optimum extraction and voluptuous texture before the must was gently pressed into French barriques (35% new) where it underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was further aged on its fine lees for 31 months in the same barrels.
Tasting notes; This wine is made exclusively from hand-picked Shiraz grapes grown on our ‘terra rossa’ soils in the Broke sub-region of the Hunter Valley. – The colour is dense with a bright glossy rim. The nose shows concentrated dark fruits, prunes and Christmas cake balanced with fine oak. – The palate has a complex blend of fruit and tannin with a ‘sweet fruit’ core on the mid palate. The finish is long with plenty of fruit weight that lingers on the palate.
